How Do I Look?

Right leg – then left leg – always the right one first.

Slip them on. Yep, still fit.

Blow dry – make-up  – jewelry.

How do I look?

I have never been one that needs to hear it from others. It’s really my own voice that will always be the most critical.

This is what happens every time I return to the States.

21 days in Africa will take the vanity out of anyone! Covered in sweat for 23 out of the 24 daily hours. Being seen for your contribution verses your complexion. I’ll take it.

I distinctly remember being annoyed my first morning back.

Awake – shower – dress – the office is waiting. And… How do I look?

My European life is a far cry from that Kenyan village.

But my reaction when I land back in the States is strikingly similar.

In Madrid I wake – shower – dress – just the same.  I take care of myself and take care to look pretty – just the same.  I am sure someone appreciates it.

But it feels different. I am more self accepting.

Even in the heart of all things fashion. Even in Milan, where that Neverfull is on every arm and there are far more fashion  Do’s than Don’t, I didn’t self analyze like I do here.

Maybe it’s being the States, the place where I developed all ideas of self image.  The good and the bad.

Maybe it speaks to American culture.

All I know is, it’s annoying as hell! Yes, I mean that with all the irritating emotion that that statements implies.

What’s true is, I am just the same as I was a week ago, walking in Madrid.

I am just as charming and lovely, just as smart, and definitely just as pretty. Say it for yourself it just feels good!

We should all be more like Jessica

I absolutely agree that living in the States hurts self-image. I lived abroad in central America for almost a year and felt confident, beautiful, but mostly less concerned with my appearance, body and style. Immediately upon returning to the States, my self-image crashed… whether because of media or whatever else. Operation Beautiful will surely help women realize the truth!

Im from swizerland, and I realized, thad wehn Im in france for holidays I feal so much more selfconfident with out dressing up like I usulay do in swizerland, I do not wear any make up and stil feal pretty other than at home, I wloud never go out at home with out wearing a tone of make up on my face. And I stil don’t feal as confident as im doing in france. Mayby people in the south are just more selfconfident than peopel in the nord.

I think we can all learn a little bit from childhood when you never needed makeup and it didn’t matter what you look like in a bikini it just mattered that you had fun and were loving life. Thhats an awesome kid too.

When the disciples asked Jesus who is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven, Jesus called a little boy from the crowd and had him stand among them as an example. “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “unless you can change and become more like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. – that is the first context from the bible that comes to mind when I see this. Amazing! Absolutely amazing! :)
